Friday, December 31st, 2010

from Matthew Coller of The Biz of Hockey,

NHL attendance is up 0.2 percent from December last year. While it isn’t a large gain, the numbers indicate that 16 teams have seen bumps in attendance anywhere from 0.1 percent to 13.2 percent. The Nashville Predators’ had the biggest gain going from 80.2 percent at last mid-season and 93.4 this season. Nine teams suffered a drop in attendance from the mid-point of last year, including losses of 13 percent by the Dallas Stars and New York Islanders.

Getzlaf Update & Lapierre Talks

Friday, December 31st, 2010

via the Anaheim Ducks,

Ryan Getzlaf had another CT scan today and visited with a specialist (maxillofacial surgeon). The CT scan showed that the nasal sinus fractures are non-displaced and stable. However, more evaluation of the bone breaks are needed over the next several days before a definitive expected absence can be determined. For the time being, Getzlaf is out indefinitely.

via Helene Elliott of the Fabulous Forum,

Lapierre, 25, said he is excited about getting a new start with the Ducks after getting progressively less playing time with the Canadiens. He averaged 11:41 over 38 games this season, slightly down from 12:16 last season and a big drop from his average of 14:48 in 2008-09.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of St. Leonard said he didn’t ask out, though he did ask for clarification of his role under Coach Jacques Martin.

“We had a discussion. I didn’t really ask to be traded but I wanted to know where things were at for me,” he said. “I asked if I was part of their plans and they pretty much said no.

Google News Alerts Can Suck It . Happy New Years.

Friday, December 31st, 2010

That’s right Google.  You can take your little one-sentence alerts and you can suck on them the rest of the evening , and for the next six months really.  All they do is frustrate me just like Sh—– C—— did in high school when she drew the whole damn periodic table on her thigh but wouldn’t let me look at it.  Not during the exam and certainly not afterward.  She was the Google News Alert of high school teases.

Winter Classic Alert- Game Time Change

Friday, December 31st, 2010

The Winter Classic game is now scheduled for 8:00pm ET tomorrow.

added 5:03pm,

PITTSBURGH (December 31, 2010) – The National Hockey League announced today the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will change the original 1 p.m. (ET) start time on New Year’s Day to 8 p.m. (ET).  The decision was based on the latest meteorological reports, which have advised an approaching front of potentially steady rain expected to fall through the afternoon and taper off by early evening, and after consultation with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals, national broadcast partners (NBC, CBC, RDS), the Pittsburgh Steelers, the National Hockey League Players’ Association, and local officials.

We have been further advised that cooler and drier air conditions are expected in the evening with the passing of the front.  The NHL feels that it was important to make this announcement at this time so as to minimize the inconvenience to all parties associated with the event, especially our fans.

Big Job Ahead In Calgary

Friday, December 31st, 2010

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

Whenever an organization makes a significant change at the top, as the Flames did this week, there is always that cathartic short-term adrenalin rush in the community – that better days are ahead and maybe even just around the corner. Then the snow falls the next morning again, and the actual work begins – of sloooooooowly changing a culture, a line-up, a development system; in short, of making all the other various and sundry adjustments needed before an organization can get back on the right track.

It is a slow and imprecise process and many times, requires a franchise to take one step backward in order to move two steps ahead. Too often, the transitional regime doesn’t ever get the necessary time to effect real change – and pays the price because of the prevailing what-have-you-done-for-me-lately ethic that permeates professional sport (and isn’t limited to just impatient radio audiences).

It can be a thankless job and requires someone to go into the undertaking with his eyes wide open – which is where the new interim Calgary general manager Jay Feaster finds himself now.
