Thursday, June 30th, 2011Some Canucks free agent targets: Your UFA cheat-sheet
Thursday, June 30th, 2011Heading into tomorrow’s free agency period, the Canucks have limited needs to cover, but, at the very least, need for improvement in a couple of areas. As best we can tell, the Canucks three needs are:
Top-Six Winger
The absence of Mikael Samuelsson was noticed through the late rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and it might be time to ditch the belief that Ryan Kesler can play effectively through 100 games a season without a winger on either side. Preferably, somebody who can shoot.
One More Year For Modano?
Thursday, June 30th, 2011fromm Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Mike Modano will see what free agency has to offer before he’ll consider retirement, he said Thursday.
” go back and forth a lot, but the bottom line is the injury I had really messed up last season,’’ he said of getting his wrist punctured by a skate in November and missing 42 games. “I felt great before I got hurt, I feel great now, but I missed out a on a lot of the season, and so it does make you feel like maybe there’s something more.’‘
Modano, who turned 41 on June 7, was seeking a little closure when he decided to try free agency last summer.
Bottom line, he wasn’t ready to call it a career when Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk told him that he would not get another contract in Dallas. So, he signed a one-year free agent deal, went back to his hometown of Detroit and played a season with the Red Wings in search of maybe a few answers.

Thursday, June 30th, 2011Dr Seuss Runs Down Free Agency
Thursday, June 30th, 2011Well, not Dr. Seuss, but Jeffrey Seaver at Blue Line Station takes a stab at it:
Bettman, I am.
That Gary Bettman, That Gary Bettman,
I do not like that Gary Bettman.
Do you like free agency and all it delivers?
I do not like it,
Gary Bettman,
I do not like free agency.
Not really the “rhyming” approach to Seuss, but it has a beat.
Blackhawks Sign Montador, 4 Years
Thursday, June 30th, 2011via an email alert from Sportsnet.ca:
Chicago re-signs Steve Montador
Length of contract: 4 years
Average annual value: $2.75 million
Signings You Might Regret
Thursday, June 30th, 2011From Adam Proteau at The Hockey News:
Sometimes that regret doesn’t reveal itself for a couple years (as was the case with Nikolai Khabibulin in Edmonton) and sometimes it reveals itself almost immediately (as was true of the Jason Blake experiment in Toronto). So which pending unrestricted free agents this summer have the potential to turn into multi-million dollar albatrosses? In no particular order, here are the top five UFAs I’d steer clear of:
1. Tomas Vokoun
With Ilya Bryzgalov signing a ludicrous contract (nine years and $51 million), Vokoun is the biggest netminding name on the market. But like Bryzgalov, Vokoun has done nothing in the post-season to deserve a huge and lengthy deal.
